Our Favourite Walks near Mayen

Walking is one of our favourite things to do when we are on staycation, and whether you are looking for a nice summers walk or a beautiful autumn stroll, there are so many beautiful pathways around Mayen, each with their own marvellous jewels to be discovered.

Mayen to Rothiemay

Trees, birdsong and breathtaking River Deveron Valley views, the treelined road from Mayen to Rothiemay is a stunning three mile walk and a popular cycling route.  When you reach the village, why not treat yourself to a refreshing drink or light lunch at The Forbes Arms Hotel.

Bin Forest

The Bin Hill at the heart of this 300 year old Fir forest is a popular Sunday Stroll destination, with impressive views of the Deveron Valley to reward you at the Summit.  Rumour has it that the Gallon of Water near the peak hold medicinal values, but we can guarantee that the stunning walk will do you good.

Huntly Castle

Once the home of one of Renaissance Scotland’s most notable families, the ruined Huntly Castle lies 10 miles from Mayen Estate on the outskirts of Huntly.  A beautifully sculpted building to admire, you can walk from the centre of Huntly alongside the River Deveron before reaching the grounds of the castle and circuiting back through Huntly for a total of two miles; the route is ideal for children and dogs too.

Tap o’ Noth

If you are looking for something slightly more challenging then why not try Tap o’ Noth, a 4.8km semi-rugged trail which brings you 288m above sea level.  While the route is suitable for walking, running, cycling or moderate hiking, the secluded vistas along the trail are the ideal places for you to stop for a picnic lunch or ponder across the panoramic countryside views.

Huntly to Clasmach Hill

Journeying through 7.4km and elevating 262 metres high, this slightly more challenging trail from Huntly to Clashmach Hill is ideal for cycling, walking and even some wild birdspotting.  The relatively undisturbed route is welcome to dogwalkers too, and on clear days you can even gaze as far north as the Caithness Hills!

Leith Hall

Real history buffs will know that Leith Hall has historic connections to our very own estate, and this stately home offers several leisurely trails to enjoy, with a pond, bird hide and an ice house to explore along the way.  The parkland and farmland paths are suitable for dogs, wheelchairs and buggies too.
